Golf Clubs 101As you can guess from our name, we at Nevada Bob’s Golf are passionate about the game of golf, and we want to help more people enjoy it. If you are interested in trying this great game for yourself, there are some key things you need to know first, starting with the basics of the different clubs. In this article, our experts will provide a brief overview of the main types of golf clubs so that you understand the purpose of each one.

  • One of the main types of golf club is known as “woods,” after the material that their heads were historically made of. Their heads are hollow, and they are the largest of all the golf clubs, with the longest shaft and the biggest head. Golfers can swing these clubs the fastest, and they are therefore used for the longest shots. Drivers, another variety of club, are a subset of woods.
  • These golf clubs have smaller heads than woods do, which are typically very thin from front to back (earning them the nickname “blades”). Their heads are usually solid in construction, although some are hollow, and they have angled faces (called “lofts”) that are etched with a number of grooves. These grooves help grip the ball and give it spin. Irons are usually used for shots from the fairway or for tee shots on short holes.
  • Putters are a highly specialized class, which means that these golf clubs come in a wide variety of shapes and styles. As the name states, they are used for putting or making the last few strokes to knock the ball into the hole. Because they vary so much, it’s a good idea to try out a few styles before committing to the one that works best for you.
